Achieved Eco Goals

Our eco vision to become “clean all the way” continues in full phase. It’s important to talk about sustainability, but it’s even more important what you essentially do for the environment. At Guideline we always like to push boundaries. So, for 2020 we challenged ourselves with the task to make the most environmentally friendly carbon fly rod in the world.  It was indeed a challenging task. Not only to source new alternative materials and components but also re-define new production processes to make even lighter and better performing fly rods. But we succeeded, and we are now proud to present Elevation – The Greener Fly Rod Series. We believe it’s the best fly rod in the world for the environmentally cautious angler!

Furthermore, we have made big steps in fly line manufacturing, clothing and packaging. By sourcing more eco-friendly materials, components and packaging.  In order to help our customers choose more sustainable products we introduced a new green eco logo that you will find on these products. We still have a long way to go, but below we can present small steps and actions that we have achived.

ELEVATION – The Greener Fly Rod Series (2020)

Guideline launches green and eco-friendly fly rods. The new Elevation rod series is purpose built to reduce harmful footprint meaning less or no toxic chemicals and greener components while still using graphite for best performance.

Non grinded blanks:
Blanks are just lightly buffed to soften the spiral pattern from baking tape. This is kept to a minimum and any excessive waste is collected in separate tank before water is passed on to community cleaning facility. The blanks have a soft spiral pattern and thin, matte, low VOC-coating.

Low resin graphite: A denser weave compound of carbon fibers than normal prepreg. This reduces the amount of resin needed to fill and reinforce the gaps between each fiber. As the resin has a high weight, these low resin content rods are lighter, more condensed and feature a faster and more powerful recovery.

No chrome = No lead. Rods are mounted with light wire single leg guides. We use an eco-friendly powder coat finish (PVD = Physical Vapor Deposition) on a stainless frame, very hard but with no chrome plating (which contains lead).

No epoxy glue in cork grips: The cork rings in the grips are glued with Titebond III, non-toxic, water-based and waterproof one component glue. The same glue is used by professional custom rod builders across the globe.

No rubber cork: We use only natural cork where possible, as it contains less amount of resins and glues than rubber cork or other mixed compounds do.

Low toxin/low VOC coating/no paint:

By applying a minimum amount of coating without any color pigments added, the blank surface is sealed and protected from salt and dirt, while minimizing weight and volume of resins on the surface of the rod. The coating we use has almost no odor and is a great choice for the workers environment, while providing a more than sufficient bond and protection to the blank.

Clear anodized aluminum:  Metal parts on the reel seats are “clear anodized” which is the least time- and power-consuming process when anodizing aluminum reel seats. We use no added colors, which further reduces environmental impact.

ECO-friendly Epoxy: Epoxy adhesives and coatings used during the production of Elevation rods have been tested and approved according to both US and European health standards in regard to lead, phthalates, VOC and heavy metals.

No plastic sleeves on rod grips: We reduce use of plastic to a minimum by delivering the rods without plastic on the grips.

Eco-friendly tubes and rod bags:
Our new tubes are made with Recyclable Polypropylene material which is PVC-free.
Both tube cover and rod bags are made of Recycled polyester by Repreve™.
In addition the tubes are redesigned and decreased by 15-20% (depending on model) to reduce transportation volume.

Smaller tubes (2020)

We now use Polypropylene (PP) in our tubes for Elevation and Stoked fly rods. Polypropylene is a more flexible plastic that is not harmful for nature or for you to use (PVC free). Using PP in our tubes also means much less water consumption and very low proportions of raw material waste or emission during the production process.

The new tubes also have less weight and volume. Taking a new approach to tube-designs and the way rods are kept inside, we have managed to lower the volume of the tubes by 15-20% depending on rod model. This means less volumes to ship and store, which in turn also means less carbon footprint during freight. The Polypropylene material further improves the environmental effect by being extremely light in weight. Recycled polyester bags/tubes and less weight/volume: Both the Elevation rod bags and the strong fabric covering the lightweight Polypropylene tubes are produced from recycled polyester fabric delivered by Repreve.

New Fly Lines - ECO Advantages (2020)

New packaging design with no plastic spool and less volume.

When you choose one of these new lines: Fario Tactical, Fario Elite, Fario Distance, Power Presentation, Bullet 2.0, and LPs Euro you get the “cleanest” fly line on the market. These lines has a Polyurethane coating instead of PVC that bleeds harmful plasticizers (Phthalates) in to the water. The boxes are made from recycled paper with water-based UV coatings and we have removed all plastic spools from the packaging.

Packaging for accessories (2019)

We have now repacked all our tools using recycled cardboards saving approx 10.000 zip lock plastic bags per year.

No plastic spools (2019)

For our ULS lines, we do not use any spools at all. This eliminates the use of plastic as well as reduces the weight and volume of the packages. In 2019, we also remove the plastic spools on our 4D-, 4D Distance- and 3D+ shooting heads. As it is not a sustainable act to throw away existing packaging, we will do a “running change” in 2019. For all other lines in our range, a similar change to a better alternative is under way. In total this will reduce our use of plastic with 1,2 tons per year.

In the image above the bar to the left shows ten packings for lines where a plastic spool is included. The bar on the right shows the same number of lines in our new Care packaging. They reduce the volume by 55%, and the weight is reduced by 75%. When we fulfil our goals this means we will save over 1,2 tons of plastic per year.
