A Daddy on a size 12 hook like this is what we consider a standard crane fly imitation, and it is the most versatile size throughout the entire season. Crane flies rarely appear in such large numbers that having a highly specific imitation becomes essential. However, the appearance of this fly is very natural and features elements that trout find highly attractive, whether real insects are on the water or not. This is a must have fly for all types of lakes and ponds, and you definitely shouldn’t underestimate presenting a crane fly to sporadically rising trout in rivers either.
Like other Daddy’s, this fly has a traditional rooster hackle, which creates a bit of air resistance and can cause leader twist if you fish with too thin tippet and add high line speed. If you want to fish on calm, clear water with, for example, 5X, trim the hackle on the underside and cast gently.
Tips for floatant use:
* Thoroughly treat the entire fly with gel floatant — or even better, HND Liquid Floatant.
* After catching a fish, rinse the fly in water, dry it with amadou, and use powder floatant to revitalize it. If the powder discolors the fly, simply add a little gel again.
