The origin of the Chernobyl Ant dates to 1990, when a group of guides on Utah’s Green River were tying flies to resemble the river’s large black crickets. At this time flies made with foam was starting to get increasingly popular. This fly has nothing to do with ants, it's a mutant and an attractor pattern. However it tends to do well as imitation when large beetles, crickets, hoppers and stoneflies are on the water.
Our experience is that this fly fish very well paticular during late autumn when trout is aggressive and obsessed of protecting it's terrirtory before spawning. In general the Chernobyl Ant is a great attractor fly with a lot of life when you retreive it, on lakes with a light breeze this method is very effective. This fly is also a great pattern for salmon- and sea trout in rivers when you "hitch" it across the current.
