This fly imitates both the emerging midge and a diptera that is trapped in the surface film. In gin clear rivers this fly has fooled many trouts in midsummer when they are focused on feeding on all sorts of small black midges and gnats. However, this fly is also a great fly for lakes when the trout are gently picking the emerging midge.
Wings are made of pearl crystal flash that gives life and attraction to the pattern and it also imitates a shiny insect wing well when the sun is up. The cdc wing serves purpose as floating device that easily lets you see the fly on the water.
