Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear is an old pattern that is featured in many books from the beginning of fly fishing. The originator of the nymph pattern is unknown, but the dry fly version is attributed to the father of dry fly fishing, Fredrick M. Halford, and his famous book "Floating Flies and How to Dress Them."
Regardless, flies tied with hare's ear hair are highly versatile and can imitate a variety of insects. A hare's ear nymph can represent mayfly nymphs, stonefly larvae, and caddisfly pupae. These flies are simply a generally effective representation of various insects and prey in both still waters and rivers. Brass gold bead adds attraction and a faster siking fly.
